The race to be the highest goal scorer in the premier league this season has turned out to be the tightest and most unpredictable in recent premier league history. Sergio Aguero started the season like a house on fire pummeling 11 goals in 6 matches before Guardiola’s axe hit him, albeit unfairly. Zlatan Ibrahimovic also had a consistent return of goals before enduring his longest dry spell in his 18 year career when he went 6 premier league games without a goal to his name.
Romelu Lukaku on his side has shaken of the inconsistencies that have plagued him during his short premier league career so far, he now appears more mature and very much growing to be a complete forward. Alexis Sanchez on his part continues to prove the fact that he was good enough for Barcelona with his consistent goals helping dig out Arsenal from nasty situations at time. Diego Costa appears to have cut out the indiscipline part of his game and looks like a player who won’t miss much of the season due to suspensions; he is definitely up to the task of challenging for the honor. Jermaine Defoe is another seasoned attacker who has proven his pedigree time and again the premier league; he seems like a dark horse for the honor this season. Harry Kane has always been a contender since his breakthrough season, this year he is no far from the leaders and he is firmly in contention as always.
So with all these seven contestants, who seems the most likely to put a sustainable challenge all the way to the end? Here is what i think of the race;

Alexis Alejandro Sanchez is the full name of the 28 yr old Chile international who has been the best Arsenal player by a thousand miles, his tally of 17 goals at the time of writing would have clearly been more than that had Arsene Wenger consistently played him upfront for the gunners.
He certainly has the pedigree to bang in more goals since he has got set piece duties in the absence of first choice Santiago Carzola, however one is tempted to believe that his biggest probability of winning the golden boot lies with his manager making the big decision of utilizing him upfront
His recent stats, courtesy of fox sports, clearly show that he has goals in him, expect him to have something to say about this year’s race.
The big Belgian has had quite a career for a 23 year old, since he was discarded by Jose Mourinho as a 19 year old Chelsea youngster in the aftermath of a poor penalty against Bayern Munich, he has gone about proving the Portuguese gaffer wrong.
He has developed a reputation of banging in goals in huge quantities whenever a chance presents itself, having been the first player this season to score a hat trick in the premier league against Sunderland, he recently banged in 4 in a 6-3 romp over Bournemouth.
The Belgian is his teams’ only outlet in a lone striker role, this means that whenever Everton score, he has to be involved in one way or another.
His stats, courtesy of fox sports, is evidence to the fact that he has been a consistent double digits goal scorer, she however is on his way to posting his highest tally ever,
The big Swede, the god of Manchester, has been a revelation to Manchester United. Not many expected the 35 year old conquer England as he’d put it, but frankly speaking, he is doing a good job putting his stamp on the league. He is also the sole outlet of his team hence the expectation for him to bag the ultimate boot for a striker, the golden boot. Jose might have to manage his game time given the fact that Manchester United are challenging on four fronts this season, however he claims to be like red wine, which gets better with time, the big swede has scored goals consistently in all his clubs in an impressive long list of clubs including Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and PSG accruing 472 career goals and the accolade of being one of only 2 football players to have scored a goal in every minute of a football match ,the other player is Christiano Ronaldo.
The Brazil born Spaniard has been known for his fury and indiscipline on the field as well has his ability to bang in goals even when facing stingiest of defenses. He is a product of the long conveyer belt that is Atletico Madrid who have year after year lost their best hit man only to replace them perfectly, the list boasts of household names such as Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Sergio Aguero and him, to name just but a few.
Recently, he seems to have cut out the penchant for silly suspensions hence the reason why he will genuinely be up for the challenge. He has the enviable job of leading the current leaders’ line with support from some of the most creative players in the league in Eden Hazard, Pedro Rodriguez, Willian and sometimes the dethroned European king of assists Cesc Fabregas.
Jermain Collins Defoe is another soccer veteran who can be said to grow better with age, Defoe had already headed for retirement by joining the MLS only for him to make a comeback with Sunderland and has 283 career goals. He single handedly ensured Sunderland avoided relegation last season with his 18 goals and so far he has 14 goals to his name and he surely is going to break that tally as he looks to single handedly drag Sunderland to safety. Defoe is a dark horse for this season’s golden boot and if he wins it, it will be another great footballing story akin to that one of Leicester city winning the premier league.
Harry Edward Kane burst onto the scene in the 2014-2915 season scoring 21 league goals to win the PFA Young Player of the Year before walking away with the golden boot the following season with 25 premier league goals. He has developed a reputation of starting the league slowly and really catching on with the top scorers in the second leg of the season, he already has started his season and has 14 league goals. The young English man has a penchant of notching goals in pairs and hat tricks, for this particular reason, expect him to challenge fully for this seasons golden boot, he also plays as a lone striker ahead of the creative Christian Ericksen, Dele Alli and Heung min son.
Sergio Leonel “Kun” Agüero has been known for his aggressive goal scoring form in his entire career, in-fact, he already has notched 11 goals in 14 starts despite the fact that his manager clearly doesn’t fancy him. However, the unfortunate injury to Brazilian youngster Gabriel Jesus might just have offered the best finisher in the premier league a life line, we all (probably Pep is the only one who doesn’t) know as long as he’s fit, trust Kun to bang them in, it would be foolhardy to rule him out.
These are my 7 front runners for the golden boot, however the chasing pack is too close and someone might as well emerge and scoop the coveted boot, the likes of Sadio mane can not be ruled out of the race yet.
